A new version of AxioWorks SQList is out today!
It’s been a while since we released a new version, it was back in April 2020 and a lot has happened since! (and not much of it was good…)
Anyways, here we are, version 6.2.1.0 is out, let’s take a look at what comes with it.
AxioWorks SQList continuously export SharePoint lists and libraries as normalised SQL Server tables, making live SharePoint data available to reporting tools like Power BI, Crystal Reports, or SSRS.
Thousands of lists? No problem!
Firstly, we have fixed an issue that had been bugging us (and, even more, some of our customers) for some time. SQList Manager (the UI you use to configure SQList replications) was not handling well setting up replications of sites with thousands of SharePoint lists to SQL Server. More precisely, in the tree view, when you expanded a site with a few thousand lists the UI would freeze for quite some time until all nodes of the tree were loaded.
We have fixed this now, setting up a replication of thousands of lists is no longer a problem!
Computer says throttling…
Another thing we changed is the way SQList handles SharePoint Online throttling. Do you know what that is? Throttling is when SharePoint Online limits the number of user actions or concurrent calls, to prevent overuse of resources.
To avoid being throttled, SQList used to have a fixed delay between connections. This approach works in cases when throttling is rare, but when you replicate a few thousand lists you get to the point where “computer says no” quite often and waiting a fixed amount simply doesn’t cut it.
The way we deal with it now is very simple, we ask SharePoint: “how long do you want me to wait until I can try again?” Then wait for as long as the boss says.
Find that event log entry!
Then, a very very cool and well overdue addition! We added a filter to the event log so that you can filter or search exactly what you want to see. How many times we needed to look for events related to a specific list or filter only certain types of events and the only way was…there was no way! Well, now there is.
Finally, a few things hardly worth mentioning, like:
- a small fix to the way tooltips are displayed;
- clean up some code so that memory is not wasted
- and a couple of tweaks to the UI.
